Given its muddied history, we'll forgive you for brushing off Dodge's latest batch of R/T models. Although the R/T badge once signified a vehicle designed to tease, excite, and appease the enthusiast, in recent years, the nameplate was haphazardly applied to almost every Dodge, many of which drove no better than their conventional cousins.
The R/T range has been renewed and expanded for 2011, but its original purpose is on the way to being restored. Dodge brand CEO Ralph Gilles has promised all future R/T models will offer a "higher level of dynamic capability" -- and that appears to hold true for the 2012 Avenger R/T, which debuts this week at the 2011 New York auto show.
As is the case with other current models in the R/T portfolio (now including the Charger, Grand Caravan, Durango, and Journey), the new sport-tuned Avenger doesn't receive any wild bump underhood. In fact, it continues to make use of the same 3.6-liter, 283-horsepower Pentastar V-6 found in lesser Avengers, matched up to a six-speed automatic transmission.
In other words, it's not exactly a configuration that's going to raise eyebrows, quicken pulses, and set Internet discussion boards afire. But wait: In the immortal words of Ron Popeil, there's more.
The secret, or so we're told, lies entirely with chassis tuning. Lo, engineers have had their way with the Avenger's suspension bits in an attempt to liven up a front-drive platform long regarded as more milquetoast than magnificent. The Dodge crew says stiffness is increased by 18 percent, while front and rear spring rates are upped by 17 and 12 percent, respectively.

The ultimate Chrysler lead sled is back in business and badder than ever. Returning with a new look, more power, and updated technology features, the all-new 2012 Chrysler 300 SRT8 coming to the 2011 New York auto show is the latest creation from Chrysler's Street and Racing Technology squad. As it's done with 300s past, the SRT team has taken an already solid package and made it faster, meaner, and even a smidge greener.
For starters, the exterior of the new 300 SRT8 has been sculpted to match its high-performance character. The front end retains Chrysler's newly reshaped wing badge, but the SRT8 model gets a unique front valance and a blacked-out mesh grille.
The SRT8 sits a half-inch lower than the standard 300 on 20-inch alloy wheels, lending it a more imposing stance. Out back, there's a new chrome-accented lower fascia and dual 4-inch-diameter exhaust pipes. The available Black Chrome package adds black chrome grille surrounds, rear valance, and exclusive black chrome wheels.
Chrysler's SRT team didn't skimp on power, endowing the SRT8 with 465 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque from its 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 -- an improvement of 40 horsepower and 45 pound-feet over the previous 300 SRT8's 6.1-liter unit. With the help of an active intake manifold and high-lift camshaft, the new engine produces more torque at lower rpm, and cam phasing optimizes power at higher rpms. Chrysler estimates the 300 SRT8 can click off 0-60 mph in the high four-second range and will top out at 175 mph.

Audi claims that one small strip (1.2 inches wide, 0.08 inch thick) of the high-strength, lightweight, hot-shaped steel used in much of the new A7 Sportback's body is so strong that it could suspend five A7s, each one roughly 4000 pounds. That's one strong bookmark. Arguably more noteworthy than the super steel is the fact that feathery aluminum makes up nearly 20 percent of the Sportback's bod, including the hood, hatch, doors, and front fenders, resulting in a relatively light curb weight. A BMW 535i xDrive GT, in comparison, tips the scales with about 700 extra pounds.
But what really makes Audi's new blend of coupe, sedan, and wagon so special? Ah, that would be its elegant and sporty sheetmetal, a dead ringer for the drop-dead-gorgeous Sportback concept unveiled at the 2009 Detroit auto show. Full LED headlamps are available (Xenon plus lamps are standard), while the taillamps are made up entirely of LEDs, sans the reverse light. Moreover, the side-view mirrors sport LED indicators, and the CHMSL is a thin LED strip that extends above the back window across the width of the hatch. At the base of the rear deck resides an integrated spoiler that subtly sleeps until 80 mph, when it extends upwards for increased down force. Back to those side mirrors: They're mounted on the doors, a la the R8, to give the A7 a more sports-car feel. Another subtle but significant design cue is the small, rear window incorporated into the sweeping C-pillar that harks back to that of the 1969 100 Coupe S.

You'd have to be a real Aston Martin aficionado to spot the differences between the DB9 coupe and the new Virage. Even Aston design chief Marek Reichman concedes the differences between the two cars are quite subtle.
In case you're wondering, the Virage gets crisp new front fenders, more muscular fascias front and rear, new sill extensions, and even new rear fenders -- DB9 units that are re-stamped in a secondary process to pump them out over the wider rear tires. Changes inside include new stitching on the leather seats and upgraded switchgear.

It's not obvious stuff. So why do it? "The Virage sits between the classic, elegant DB9 and the very overt and sporting DBS," says Reichman. "This is more edgy than the DB9, with more horsepower, but it is also more refined."
That sounds like a death sentence for the DB9, as most Aston buyers aren't the types to worry too deeply about finding more money for their new car. But maybe there's method in Aston's madness.

Under the management of Fiat, the Chrysler Group has pursued an important strategy -- steady product improvement. This includes the gradual introduction of new trim levels on existing models to improve the appeal of its overall lineup. The latest model to receive an incremental update is Jeep's iconic Wrangler.
Introduced in 2007 and treated to a comprehensive interior revamp at the beginning of the 2011 model year, Jeep is now showing off the Mojave trim level of the brand's spiritual leader, the third-generation JK Wrangler. The package is a combination of some of the most popular features of the other trim levels for the Wrangler, including the side steps from the Sahara trim, and the wheels and tires from the legendary and beloved Rubicon model.
The icing on the cake is a unique graphics package consisting of lizard decals and fender graphics. To add some flair to the interior, the lizard graphic is embossed on the front seats. Beefing up the exterior is a black fuel-filler door and taillight guards. The Mojave trim package will be available on both the standard Wrangler and the four-door Unlimited starting in June.
Unfortunately, there's nothing new to report in the way of mechanical upgrades. The Mojave soldiers on with the 3.8-liter pushrod V-6 and six-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. It's widely expected that the company's new 3.6 liter Pentastar DOHC 24-valve V-6 will appear for the 2012 model year with significantly improved power and fuel economy over the current powertrain

 Three years after Jaguar launched a performance-tuned XKR-S model at the Geneva Motor Show, the automaker revealed it will be bringing an all-new, more powerful XKR-S to this year's Geneva extravaganza. Deja vu? Perhaps, but the latest XKR-S promises to be a much more intimidating cat than the last.
If nothing else, the new XKR-S certainly looks the part. Designers have added a number of bespoke touches from head to toe, including an aggressive front fascia with a large lower air intake, sweeping air scoops on the front corners, and small, slender air ducts just beneath the hood's lower edge. XKR-S models eschew the XK's vertical fender vent in favor of a horizontal port. Flared side sills are much smoother than those used on both the XKR Speed Pack and the previous XKR-S. A flared rear valence, similar to that used on the Speed Pack, provides room for four exhaust tips, while a wild wing spoiler rests atop the decklid.
Unlike the previous XKR-S, however, the new model receives some additional go along with all this show. The supercharged, direct-injection 5.0-liter V-8 is boosted to roughly 542 horsepower and 501 pound-feet of torque, a gain of 32 horsepower and 40 pound-feet of torque. Jaguar says the power allows the new XKR-S to sprint from 0-60 in a blistering 4.2 seconds, run from 0-100 mph in 8.6 seconds, and hit a top speed of 186 mph. That's plenty quick, but the automaker says the XKR-S is the "fastest Jaguar ever" -- perhaps, unless you consider the XJ220...
Jaguar is keeping a number of the other XKR-S details under wraps until the car's official unveiling next week, but does note the car will receive unique suspension modifications at both ends, and a recalibrated stability system, which potentially allows drivers to push the envelope a little further.
We wouldn't be surprised if Jaguar again decides to limit production of the XKR-S (the previous iteration was restricted to 200 examples), but we do hope the company finds a way of importing the model to North America this time around.

 The completely redesigned and re-engineered Kia Picanto subcompact will make its first public appearance at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show and will hit European showrooms not long afterward. Seemingly on an unstoppable roll, we wonder if Kia will consider bringing its new city car to the U.S.
The styling of the diminutive hatchback is described as more mature and self-confident than before. Or as Kia's Chief Design Officer, Peter Schreyer put it, "In profile, the new Picanto features significant sculpting and a very prominent rising character line. The result is a layering of light and shadow and this breaks up the height, giving the car a more sure-footed stance."
The new Picanto will be powered by four different variations of 1.0- and 1.2-liter gas, diesel, bi-fuel and flex-fuel engines. While we don't expect huge performance numbers from these thumpers, class-leading emissions numbers are likely. The new Picanto will still be available in a five-door model, with Kia adding a three-door for the European crowd shortly.
