If the Suzuki Kizashi's existing value argument isn't allure enough, Suzuki will soon be sweetening the pot that much more with a nifty Sport variant of its GTS and SLS trim levels in either front- or all-wheel drive guise. Now, if the identifier 'Sport' suggests to you some sort of fire-breathing, mega-winged wonder -- well, you'll be disappointed. But if a crisper-driving version of the affordable Kizashi is an appealing idea for your drive to work, the Sport's list of tweaks might be a perfect fit.
While the Kizashi's engine, transmission, springs, shocks and tires are all unchanged, the suspension's bushings have been modified, its restyled 18-inch wheels have shed 2 pounds each, and the center of gravity has been lowered by 10 mm. The consequence is a Kizashi that turns-in more enthusiastically, communicates a lot better in those corners, and likely delivers a slightly higher level of grip, though we'll need a day at the test track to document this. We'll also need some highway time to tell if these modifications drastically affect the Kizashi's already commendable ride quality, though not much degradation was noticed during our brief test drive on a crumbling defunct airstrip. Notably, we also didn't detect any of the funny-business from the rear suspension that we noticed last year in a pre-production Kizashi during our 2010 Car of the Year competition. That, evidently, was a genuine anomaly.
Visually, the Sport -- specifically, either the Sport GTS or Sport SLS -- will receive revised front fascias (though the changes to it are subtle and hard to detect), extra bright-work here and there, revised grill treatments, more aggressive rocker panels, protruding lower door extensions, and a subtle rear spoiler. Inside, the steering wheel gains perforated leather and contrasting stitching will now highlight leather-upholstered interiors. Expect exact pricing to be announced as the Kizashi Sport's August on-sale date nears.
