Though it's not immediately apparent, the BMW 1 Series has been refreshed for the 2012 model year. Starting with the obvious, the 128i Coupe and Convertible’s front fascia have lost the more conservative look of their predecessor. As the red Convertible pictured shows, the lower fascia is resculpted and the foglight housings have been redone. Tucked toward the outer edge of the foglight housings and barely visible in the photo are air ducts that are part of BMW’s Air Curtain feature, which was first introduced on the 1 Series M Coupe. Air Curtain is standard on all 2012 128i models and directs high-pressure air from the front end to the sides of the front wheels to help combat the natural turbulence generated by the wheels’ rapid rotation, all in the name of improved aerodynamic performance. Special Aero wheels will be up for order as well.
The 135i Coupe and Convertible appears to be mostly untouched on the exterior. The top-of-the-line 1 Series already comes with the M Aerodynamic Kit standard and doesn’t add Air Curtain. Additionally, fresh design accents have been implemented into the 128i and 135i headlights and taillights.
Inside, a Gloss White interior trim is the latest option for the 2012 model year and certain switches and controls have been refined for a better look and feel.
The 128i remains powered by the 3.0-liter inline-six with 230 horsepower and 200 pound-feet of torque; the 135i puts the turbocharged, 3.0-liter inline-six with 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque to good use. A six-speed manual transmission is the norm, but a six-speed automatic (128i) and seven-speed Double Clutch Transmission (135i) are available too.
The 2012 1 Series Coupe and Convertible will go on sale Spring 2011.

On the heels of the the BMW 6 Series Coupe Concept which debuted earlier this year at the Paris auto show is the production-ready version of the 2012 BMW 650i Convertible. It looks very much like the Concept Coupe sans fixed roof, and BMW seems fully prepared to make the new 6 the technological showcase the Concept promises.
Starting with a redesigned chassis, the new 6 is 2.9 inches longer both overall and in wheelbase, 1.5 inches wider, and less than half-an-inch shorter in height. Weight change information hasn't been released, but several steps have been taken to lighten the big tourer. The front fenders, roof cover, and trunk lid are composite, while the doors, hood, and front shock towers all are constructed from aluminum. All those body panels represent what BMW calls "athletic elegance and natural sportiness." The lines that start at the hood and flow backward are inspired by the waves pushing off the bow of a motorboat. Whatever the inspiration, the new 6 has a more classic look that should age much more gracefully than the previous flame-surfaced design.
Technology is going to be the real party trick that sells the new 6. It's loaded to the gills with electronics like Driving Dynamic Control, which allows the driver to dial in how the car responds with throttle mapping, steering assist, damping, stability, and traction control. It will also be equipped with BMW's new ConnectedDrive, which boasts features like Auto High Beam control, lane departure warning system, auto blindspot detection, rear and top view cameras for parking assistance, proximity sensors, night vision, 3-D heads-up display and even active cruise control with start/stop capability. All this technology could be a signal of just how close we're getting to a self-driving car.

The new Audi A6, going on sale in Germany in early 2011, has no need to adopt the fashionable coupe-like look, because that job is done by the A7. Instead it emphasizes its role as a traditional executive sedan, and its silhouette is little changed from the outgoing car -- or indeed, the one before that. But the detailing is far richer.
The A6's beautiful -- and beautifully made -- interior shares much with the A7. The dashboard uses wood reminiscent of a 1960s luxury speedboat, with a wrapping element around the driver and passenger, running away from the dash and into the doors. The MMI unit has an optional handwriting-recognition pad, like the A8 and A7. A head-up display also appears on the A6 options list for the first time. The center dash screen, 6.5 or 8 inches depending on the level of MMI, deploys electrically from a recess in the dash.
Although a high proportion of the understructure is shared with the A7, none of the major external panels are the same. The A6 has deeper feature lines and fuller surfacing. At 194 inches long, it is slightly shorter than the A7, but both have the same 115-inch wheelbase. The A6 actually is a fraction shorter than the outgoing car, but lower and longer in the wheelbase.
Some 20 percent of the bodywork is aluminum, including the strut towers in the engine bay, the crossmember behind the front and rear bumpers, and the engine bulkhead and rear crossmember. Aluminum also is used for the front fenders, engine hood, trunklid, and all the doors. Audi says this cuts 15 percent from the body mass, compared with conventional steel.
The new car shares its drivetrains with the A7 above it and the A4A5Q5 below it. At launch the base version will be a naturally aspirated 2.8 V-6, with Multitronic CVT, delivering 204 horsepower and a claimed 0-62-mph time of 7.7 seconds. Above it is the 3.0 TFSI V-6 with supercharger, which develops 300 horsepower and comes with quattro drive and seven-speed S-tronic dual-clutch transmission. It does the 0-62 sprint in 5.5 seconds.
There will be a hybrid model using a 2.0 TFSI four-cylinder gasoline engine producing 211 horsepower and a 33kW 45-horsepower electric motor. The electric motor sits in the space normally occupied by a torque converter, ahead of the eight-speed auto transmission. Its trunk-mounted lithium ion battery is claimed to be good for 2 miles running solely on gentle electric from a full charge. This version is front-wheel drive.
All models feature aluminum suspension control arms. Adaptive air suspension is optional, and wheel sizes go up to 20 inches.
The power steering system is now electromechanical, which saves fuel and enables the option of fully automated parking assist. At highway speed, the car can also guide itself back between the white lines if the forward-facing camera detects that the driver is straying out of the lane. The optional front crash-sensing system uses data from radar sensors, a video camera, and ultrasonic sensors, as well as the navigation system, to analyze the possibility of a front crash and brake the car accordingly. This is one of the high-end systems borrowed from the A8.
Depending on the market, there are no less than four headlamp designs for the A6. The one in the pictures is all-LED, but there are also adaptive Xenon, normal Xenon, and regular halogen.
In the U.S., cars like this are premium machines with high prices. But back in Germany, the A6 has a wider range of jobs to do, acting as a large family car and especially as a taxi, so lots of them are sold as four-cylinder diesel versions with manual transmission and cloth seats. Thus its home-market base price will be [euro]38,500, equivalent to $50,100.

Will Buick repeat its Enclave magic with the Verano? The Enclave shares its platform with the Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia. It also shares Buick-GMC dealership floors with the Acadia Denali, a premium crossover that comes with similar sticker prices. Yet GM says there's virtually no cross-shopping between the Enclave and Acadia Denali. Different customers, the company says, so Enclave sales continue to increase, four years into the product cycle.
The Cruze was supposed to be a new-age Chevrolet compact, with premium attributes at a Chevy price. Well-equipped models have pretty nice interiors and a long roster of features. Where is there room for a Buick version? North American market Chevy Cruzes even got the Z-link rear suspension (except for the fuel-miser Cruze Eco) that GM was saving just for the Buick.
While the Cruze is a global-market car, the Buick Verano, like the Regal, is heavily based on an Opel/Vauxhall, in this case the Astra four-door sedan. Chief engineer Jim Federico notes that the Buick/Opel has an especially rigid body structure, so he was able to tune it for a more comfortable ride, while maintaining good handling attributes. True to Buick's reputation, the Verano will have the tightest body sealing possible and engine compartment acoustics to ensure it's among the quietest compacts extant.

 The Verano shows off the kind of elegance that made the 1961-62 Special a standout. It "has the kind of proportions not unlike the LaCrosse," notes Buick design director David Lyon, with its long cabin and sleek aero. It shares no sheetmetal with the Cruze, and unlike the Chevy or the Opel/Vauxhall, it has "portholes," or ventiports, on each side of the hood. The Kennedy-era Special comparison is apt because GM's first modern compacts were distinguished by engines as well as layout. The Special, with its all-new V-6 and mini-LeSabre/Invicta/Electra 225 styling, won our 1962 Car of the Year award, one year after the Pontiac Tempest and two years after the Corvair.

When should an automaker change a radically new car's name? For Volkswagen, a big, American-size Passat is still a Passat. For Chevrolet, the new Aveo replacement is now the Sonic. Like the Passat, it represents a significant change.
Like its next-size up sibling, Cruze, the 2012 Chevy Sonic is on the large size of its segment, the b-car category now populated by Ford Fiesta and Honda Fit.
"Don't call it an Aveo replacement," says Chevy small car marketing director Margaret Brooks, even after we have called it the Aveo replacement.
Styling is much improved, with a nice, small-car take on the classic Chevy front end-graphics. Chevy has shown the hatchback for a long time, though this is the first official look at the four-door sedan. Like Ford with its Fiesta, Chevy is expecting the hatchback to be the volume model, especially with young, first-time buyers.
The Sonic retains the motorcycle-like instrument panel and uncovered dual headlamps of the concept version. Engines are from the Cruze, a 135-horsepower/123 pound-feet 1.8-liter Ecotec four available with a five-speed manual, and a 138-horsepower/148 pound-feet 1.4-liter Ecotec turbo four, available with a six-speed manual. Either engine also gets a six-speed automatic option. The Sonic is six inches shorter, and 500 pounds lighter than the Cruze, though Chevy also claims class-leading rear legroom and cargo space.
Electronic power steering and Stabilitrak will be standard when the car goes on sale this fall. Optional features will include OnStar with turn-by-turn navigation, XM radio, a USB port, Bluetooth connection, the MyChevrolet mobile app, OnStar MyLink, and remote start, heated front seats and sunroof. See? It's not a rental.

Volkswagen's Passat replacement, still called the Passat, grows to large-midsize, will sticker for as little as $20,000 and gets an optional 2.0-liter turbodiesel. The car, which is making its debut at the 2011 Detroit show, goes on sale by this September. VW's spin on the Accord-sized and -priced 2012 Passat is that it represents "accessible German engineering." It's a key component in VW's quest to sell 800,000 cars and sport/utilities in the United States by 2018.

VW has a long way to go to those sales volumes, part of VW's world domination plans that entail passing Toyota to become the largest automaker by mid-decade. VW, exclusive of Audi, sold about 260,000 cars and sport/utilities here last year, and expects to sell about 300,000 here in '11. The 2012 Passat should sell in more or less equal numbers as the new Jetta, a model that has long been the bestselling European nameplate in North America, selling in the low 100,000s.
To appeal to a wider audience, mostly Toyota, Honda and Hyundai owners, VW is replacing the smallish-midsize Passat with an Accord-sized 191.7-inch long four-door sedan on a 110.4-inch wheelbase. VW claims best-in-class rear-seat legroom. Strictly speaking, the new Passat doesn't share its platform with anything else sold in North America, though VW has commonized its transverse-engine models (which is just about everything) into the MQB component set. That means the Passat will share many components with the Mexican-built Jetta, among others.

Base engine will be the unimpressive 170-horsepower 2.5-liter inline five, the Jetta's volume engine, supplied out of Mexico. The German-built 280-horsepower, 3.6-liter VR6 engine will be optional, as well as an updated version of VW's 2.0-liter turbodiesel four with 140-horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque, which Volkswagen expects will earn a 43-mpg highway fuel mileage number from the EPA. Built in Poland, the TDI relies on urea aftertreatment to clean emissions.
A five-speed manual will be offered with the 2.5 and the turbodiesel will be offered with a six-speed manual, while the VR6 will be offered with the sequential manual gearbox. A six-speed automatic will be optional with all engines. While the Passat goes from being a midsize car on the small end of that spectrum to one on the large side, it loses almost 80 pounds, VW says.
The chassis features a multi-link rear suspension, with MacPherson struts up front.

Just like the 2.0-liter base '11 Jetta, the '12 Passat will start with a low-priced version featuring the 2.5-liter five, for about $20,000, "a breakthrough price for VW," one executive says. Intelligent crash response, automatic climate control and a three-year, 36,000-mile free maintenance plan will be standard.
The heart of the new Passat will probably be in the $25,000 to $28,000 territory, with such features as keyless entry, remote start and wheels as large as 18-inches, options that VW says don't matter as much to European buyers. Upper trim levels will be available with any of the three engines, and VW isn't saying whether the diesel or the VR6 will be the more expensive powertrain.
Assembly begins in VW's new Chattanooga, Tennessee, plant later this year. The factory has a capacity of 150,000 cars per year on two shifts, although with minor changes such as the addition of more robots, it can expand annual production to 250,000. And there's room to double the factory's footprint, for up to 500,000. That leaves room for potential engine production in the new Tennessee plant, and for future models off the new Passat's platform, like, possibly, a new Honda Pilot-size three-row crossover, larger than the Touareg.

Meet the new Prius v, a five-passenger midsize hybrid that gets an EPA estimated 42 mpg city and 38 mpg highway and spearheads Toyota's expansion of the Prius line from a single vehicle to the industry's first all hybrid-electric brand.
Toyota announced the expansion of the Prius into a full family of vehicles at its booth today at the 2011 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), with the Prius v leading the charge. In addition, Toyota revealed the Prius c, a smaller, lower cost hybrid meant for urban running. Toyota claims the c will "will appeal to young singles and couples who want an eco-sensitive, high-mileage, fun-to-drive Prius" but we think the company has its sights set on Honda's recently announced Fit Hybrid. Rounding out the Prius family plans, Toyota provided an update on the status of its Prius Plug-in hybrid-electric vehicle program -- which has been operating on a test basis in several U.S cities. The company says it will begin selling the lithium-ion powered Prius Plug-ins in 14 states, starting in the first half of 2012. With the Plug-in variant set for production, the Prius family grows to four vehicles: Prius, Prius Plug-in, Prius v and Prius c.

Of these, the Prius v is the most intriguing as it is set to go on sale by the end of this summer. Though it shares the Prius' Hybrid Synergy Drive hybrid-electric powertrain, Toyota claims the v "is a new vehicle designed from the ground up, with a shape that evolved from Prius rather than being an elongated version." The family resemblance is obvious - Toyota is no doubt banking on the recognition and appeal of the regular Prius, which has sold some 955,000 copies in the U.S. since its introduction in 2000.
Like the current generation Prius, the Prius v is a showcase of the latest Toyota technology -- mostly notably Toyota's new Entune multimedia system. This new infotainment system uses mobile phone technology to deliver all of the content and services consumers expect on the latest smartphones, including one today's biggest buzzwords -- mobile applications. Microsofts' Bing search engine, OpenTable, and movietickets.com are just three of the notable apps listed as available one Entune, along with Pandora and iheartradio on the web-based music front. Entune also offers a laundry list of features including navigation with live weather, traffic, and news updates, a gas station locator, satellite radio, Bluetooth audio streaming and hands free phone operation, a text message read/reply service, and support for portable media player, such as iPod.

For the rest of the driving experience, the v offers a futuristic cockpit, with single-dial air-conditioning control and a center-mounted digital information display. As with the Prius, four driving modes are available -- Normal, Power, Eco and EV. Standard features include a keyless entry system with push button start, electronic shift lever, Hill Start Assist Control (HAC), and back-up camera. LED headlamps, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control with a Pre-Collision System (PCS), and Advanced Parking Guidance System -- the party trick that lets the Prius park itself -- are all options.

On the safety front, Prius v comes with seven airbags and new driver and front-passenger seat design that Toyota claims helps lessen possible whiplash injury during a collision. Also standard are Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), Anti- lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist. As a result of recent safety woes, the Prius also comes standard with Toyota's Smart Stop Technology brake-override system.
So don't worry, the Prius v is safe. In fact, it is a safe, conservative step from the company synonymous with risk aversion. But though it surprises nobody that Prius is becoming its only family of cars, you can bet that competitors worldwide are already furiously working on strategies to take on Toyota's rapidly expanding hybrid juggernaut.
